WE can be very proud of our legislative committee and lobbying team this year. My special thanks from the legislative committee to Matt Norris, Deb Driskell and John Spinks for their tremendous efforts. We all worked very hard in a professional manner to preserve township government. We have a lot of work to do throughout this year to continue working with elected officials at the state and county levels.
Even though we could not stop the elimination of township assessors we feel there will be many opportunities for assessors who are level two certified to be paid for their services. There will be many meetings over the next two months with County Assessors and Township Assessors discussing transition and other items on structure. There will be a lot of change and we have to be ready in this election year to react quickly. Our new web site will provide valuable information to you on new bills passed this year along with information about township government issues and solutions. I urge all elected trustees to engage in conversations with your County Commissioners on how your township budget works. Educate elected officials on how you benefit your township and particularly – fire protection. Be proactive in looking at how to be more efficient in providing services and do not hide from discussing consolidation on a local level with County officials. There are already laws on the books to allow townships to consolidate for fire protection and township assistance, if it makes sense to, based on assessed value and population. No consolidation can happen without a voter referendum. The more we can educate folks around the state about township government and what they get in return for the cost they will be on our side. Remember, all levels of government units are in the situation. Everyone is facing the same issues. The ITA is ready to assist you. If you wish have a county wide meeting of trustees or several counties together please contact the ITA office and we will put you on our schedule to attend. We have a lot of work to do. Please support the ITA so we can support you. Ralph Flowers |
